Those packaged cream cheese or fruity Danish pastries are one of my guilty pleasures, but they are a bit out of my price range. And they aren’t all that great for the waist line either, so they are a rare treat. The following recipe isn’t exactly healthy, but they can be made reduced fat and sugar. Plus for the cost of 2 packs of crescent rolls (about $4) and 2 packs of cream cheese ($3) I can have a whole tray of them.
These yummy little treats are actually weekday morning fast if you make them then get dressed while they are baking. Or make them the night before, or for Sunday brunch, or for afternoon snack, or dessert, or I guess you got my point.
This is like the Peach Cobbler in that you don’t need or want the top layer to be perfect. It will rise and fill the pan and if it has cream cheese poking out it is still divine. Reduced fat crescent rolls and or cream cheese work just fine, and I reduced the calories a bit more by using a half sugar/half stevia blend.
You can mix it up by adding some jam or jelly in between the cream cheese and top layer, or maybe some chocolate chips. And obviously you can swap the pecans with any other type of nut you prefer – almonds would be quite tasty, I think. Or leave the nuts out altogether for those with nut allergies or those that just don’t care for them.
Until next time, happy eating!
