    Let the crab season begin.

April 12, 2010 Filed Under: Uncategorized

Deadliest Catch crab season that is.  I became hooked on Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch a few years ago after seeing a promo for an episode in which a scruffy gravelly voiced crab fisherman is thrown from his bed in a storm and ends up with what he thinks is just broken ribs.  What can I say, I got sucked into the drama of these men as they perform physically back breaking work on equipment that could maim or kill you in an instant in ridiculously dangerous weather with little to no sleep.  And then there are the personality clashes, especially among the families.  Soap writers couldn’t come up with better stuff than some of this.  The new season starts tomorrow and, true to its promos, this season will be different.  While off-loading the boat at Saint Paul Island, Phil Harris suffered a stroke on January 29 and passed away on February 9.

So, in honor of the new season, and as a tribute to Phil Harris (and all of the other men who have died providing seafood for us) I scoured the site for crab recipes. NOTHING?! I wouldn’t say we ate crab on a regular basis, but we did enjoy it several times a year.  Why doesn’t Mom have any crab recipes on here?  Probably because when we did eat it, we had been to “The City”, picked up a crab and some fresh sourdough from Fisherman’s Wharf, made a salad and that was dinner.  Ma'am reminded me of the time when we took her brother, Clark, and his wife came to the City and the crab and bread didn't even make it to the table, we all devoured it standing up.

I found this recipe in the original hardcopy of May I Have a Copy of That Recipe.  It is from someone named Nancy Coutts.  I am not sure how Mom knew Nancy, but these are yummy!

    Open Faced Crab Sandwiches.

    • shredded meat of 1 large crab
    • 2 cups grated Longhorn Cheddar cheese
    • 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • dash white pepper
    • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon dry mustard
    • ¼ teaspoon paprika
    • ½ cup mayonnaise
    • ¼ pound butter softened
    • 12 English muffin halves (or 12 slices about ½ inch thick French bread, preferrably sourdough)

Combine all ingredients except butter and muffins.  Spread butter on muffins, top with crab mixture. Broil 4-5 inches from the flame or element until  mixture browns and begins to bubble.
