Let's hear it for the boys

June 15, 2010 Filed Under: Uncategorized

It is only fair that I write about the fantastic male cooks in my family since I wrote about the women last month.  Besides my brother, Michael, we have many other men that love to cook.  The one common thread that all of the following recipes have is awesome flavor combinations.

Beef Tournedos Denis Vineys (my father) – Flavor combination: beef, bacon and Béarnaise sauce. Probably not high on the cardiologists recommended food list, but these are worth the occasional splurge on fat and calories.

Uncle Chris’ Beans Chris Yahng (my uncle) – Flavor combination: sweet and spicy. These beans are good any time of year from summer barbecue season to warming up on a cold winter’s night.  And they are quick and easy to make!

All You Want for Christmas Cookies Clark Smith (my uncle) – Flavor combination: fruit and nuts. Yes, I am one of those weird people that like fruit cake, so I obviously enjoy these cookies.

Cherry Pie Stony Smith (my uncle) – Flavor combination: cherries and pecans (two of my all time favorites), throw in some cream cheese and sugar and I am in heaven. I could seriously eat the whole thing by myself in one sitting.

Peanut Brittle Barry Marshall (my Goddaddy) – Flavor combination: sweet and salty. This is hands down the best brittle I have ever had. Because of the extra bit of baking soda it is light and airy so you don’t worry your teeth are going to crack with every bite.  For an interesting variation try mixed nuts instead of the peanuts.

Italian Sausage Frank Gambos and Joseph Jansz (Matthew’s grandfather and uncle) Flavor combination: sweet, spicy Italian herbs and spices. Matthew’s Grandfather was a butcher in Cleveland and he originated the recipe, Uncle Joe inherited it along with the sausage making equipment and tweaked the recipe a bit.  Be sure your spices haven’t been sitting in your cupboard too long in order to get the full effect of this blend.

A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child. (Forest E Witcraft)

    Happy Father’s Day!
