    We need to jackhammer your kitchen

    May 21, 2014 Filed Under: Uncategorized

    Isn't that what every home owner wants to hear? Especially a food blogger?

    These two trucks in front of your house is not a good thing.

    I heard what sounded like water running when I opened up the cabinet under the kitchen sink, but no water was running anywhere in the house.

    who knows what evil lurks in the heart of that cabinet?

    So, I called a plumber. We have a leak in the concrete slab, probably in the "footing" (that's the part pretty much under the structure of the house itself) underneath the kitchen sink. Pretty much the worst possible place it could be in this house.

    Somewhere underneath the cabinet, underneath the concrete, is a water leak.

    Since I caught it early there is minimal water damage. Yeah!

    Except that is the part insurance covers. They don't cover pipe repair. If I had waited until I noticed water or buckling in the floor or walls I could have gotten new floor and cabinets. I will probably end up paying more out of pocket than if I had waited to notice any damage to the walls or floor and then reported it. Not sure how that happens, but if there is a way to screw myself by being honest and conscientious like that, I will find a way.

    We have two options, one is try to jackhammer into the slab and find the leak, repair it and backfill the dirt then patch the concrete. Or, cap off that pipe and reroute it, around the window between the electrical outlets, overhead and then move the water heater to connect the new pipe because of the crazy layout of my house.  Both are going to take at least a day of dust and noise and disruption. And it is Wednesday night before memorial day weekend.

    As cheap as I am, $5 is more than I want to spend right now and either choice is a little over that amount (okay, both are a LOT over that). So, I sit and wait for the insurance adjuster to decide how much if any the insurance company can help pay and which method they want us to choose. If they are paying I go with their option, because if it goes badly they are going to pay through the nose. {insert evil laugh here}

    Which all means, not much cooking is going on in the kitchen until this gets done. Therefore, not much blogging. Instead, I took some time out to refresh the look, add a mobile version, updated the recipe index, plus some social media and other boring behind the scenes maintenance stuff.

    I hope to be back up cooking and blogging soon, but in the meantime be sure to follow along on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ for some great recipes I want to try (or have tried recently). And if you need some Memorial Day inspiration, check out our Summer Pinterest Board.

    Until next time, happy eating.
