Smoothies are great for busy mornings. I usually workout first thing when I wake up in a fasted state, and then have breakfast. This Chocolate Banana Smoothie is a great way to fill up, rehydrate and replenish my energy stores.
If you want to add a little more protein, fiber, and Omega 3 fatty acids, toss in a tablespoon of flax seeds or chia seeds before blending.
Can you use protein powder instead of cocoa powder?
By the powers invested in me by the Internet I hereby grant you permission to make your smoothie how you want to make it!
Protein powder will add more protein to the smoothie than cocoa powder. I know that's fairly obvious.
I recommend that you choose a protein powder that does not have added sugar. And, if your protein is made with whey or casein they will not be dairy free. Chose what is right for you.
Dairy Free or Not Smoothies
This recipe uses almond milk and cocoa powder so there is no dairy. And it is also vegan. You can use any non-dairy milk you prefer.
If you don't need it to be vegan, use cow's milk or a whey or casein protein powder if you prefer.

Ingredients
- 1Β½ cup almond milk (unsweetened)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoon cocoa powder (unsweetened)
- 1 large banana (cut into chunks and frozen)
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 6-8 ice cubes
- 1-2 tablespoons flax seed or chia seeds (optional)
Instructions
- Add all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
- Pour into chilled glasses and serve immediately.
