Gifts in a Jar: Zesty Bean Dip

December 1, 2015 Filed Under: Appetizers

Before we jump into this week’s Tasty Tuesdays Linky Party, I have another ridiculously quick and easy Gift in a Jar for you today: a zesty Bean Dip made with Pinto Bean Flour.

Gifts in a Jar: Bean Dip - combine bean flour and spices to make a simple bean dip. Pack it in a jar to give as a gift. Gluten Free, plus Dairy Free options

I stumbled on Bean Flour at a store recently with a recipe for Bean Dip on the back. Which of course, lead me to wonder if I could make the Bean Flour at home. I figured I had nothing to lose so I tried to grind up some pinto beans in the food processor since I don’t have a flour mill. Ugh! it was horridly loud and didn’t get powdery enough. I still had small pebbles of unground beans.

Then I thought of my coffee grinder. If it can grind coffee beans, why not pinto beans? Sure enough it worked like a charm. I ran it through on espresso grind twice just to completely grind the beans.

To make the dip, all you need to do is mix in some spices then add boiling water. I like mine with a bit of cheese (Cheddar, Monterey Jack, or even a Mexican blend would be delicious). Add salsa or hot sauce if desired.

If you want to give it as a gift, just put the mix in a jar and attach these directions.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup bean flour pinto or black beans
  • 1 teaspoon dehydrated onions
  • 1 teaspoon oregano flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon chipotle chili powder optional

Instructions

  • To make your own bean flour, grind black or pinto beans in a food mill or coffee grinder to a fine powder (I used an espresso grind - twice!).
  • Combine all ingredients and pack into a 1/2 cup jelly jar.
  • Decorate jar and include instructions for making dip: In a small saucepan, add contents of container plus 1 1/2 jars of water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Add 1/4 - 1/2 cup grated cheese (optional) and stir until melted. Serve.

Notes

This recipe makes 1 small jelly jar (4 ounce size) of mix which makes 1 cup of dip. Can be doubled for 8 ounce jar.
Printable instructions: include one set of instructions with each jar for gift giving.
