Candy Buttons A Simple Colorful Nostalgic Candy

Candy Buttons (aka candy dots) are an easy and colorful treat to make for any occasion. Reminiscent of old penny candy.

This post is sponsored in conjunction with #SpringSweetsWeek. I received product samples from sponsor companies to help in the creation of the #SpringSweetsWeek recipes. All opinions are mine alone.

Candy Buttons, aka Candy Dots, are a wonderfully easy throwback candy that can be customized with different flavors and colors to suit the occasion.

Be sure to keep scrolling past the recipe to get some Spring Sweets Week deliciousness including more recipes and a giveaway.

candy buttons (candy dots) with decorative rabbits on a marble background

Strips of paper with blobs of flavored colored sugar on them. How exciting! Haha!

When you put it like that, these don't seem that thrilling. But to most adults they are reminiscent of our childhood.

And kids still think they are fun treats. Even my teen thought they were pretty cool (or whatever word he uses for good these days). He took his job of testing the three flavors very seriously.

Luckily these are ridiculously simple to make.

Ingredients and Substitutions for Candy Buttons

Candy Buttons are basically dots of Royal Icing. Yup, that crunchy icing on cookies and the stuff that holds gingerbread houses together.

There are only a few ingredients: egg whites, cream of tartar, powdered sugar, flavoring and coloring.

If you do not want use the egg whites and cream of tartar, you can use meringue powder or use this recipe that uses corn syrup instead.

I used food coloring gel for my colors, but if you want to go natural you may want to check out these from Selefina Spices.

For the paper I used parchment paper since I thought they'd be apt to slide off waxed paper too easily. Parchment has a bit more texture,

You are also going to need piping bags and a narrow tip, or plastic baggies with a tip cut off.

    Template for Candy Buttons

In the photo below you might notice I tried to do an egg shape for Easter. I am not the best piper in the land, so I abandoned that prospect and just went with the dots.

Learn from my mistake #2. I tried to cut the parchment paper after piping the dots. It is easier to cut the paper then pipe to avoid smudging the already created dots.

    Taylor & Colledge

candy buttons on a template with 3 flavored extracts.

This recipe uses 3 of my favorite Taylor & Colledge extracts: Almond, Lemon and Lavender. Yes, lavender. It tastes like it smells and is wonderful in sweets and drinks.

They also have peppermint, coconut and vanilla.

Not only are their flavor pastes amazing to cook with, the company is one I feel good about supporting considering their commitment to the fair, ethical and sustainable sourcing of vanilla.

If you can't find them in your local grocery store, you can easily order from their Amazon store.

    Ingredients

    • 3 egg whites
    • Β½ teaspoon cream of tartar
    • 1 pound powdered sugar
    • food coloring
    • flavored extracts (vanilla, lemon, almond, lavender, etc.)

    Instructions

    • Beat egg whites and cream of tartar in a large mixing bowl until they form stiff peaks (the mountain formed when removing the beater stays standing straight up).
    • Beat in powdered sugar. Divide Icing into separate bowls as desired and add extracts and coloring as desired.
    • Scoop icing into piping bags fitted with a narrow tip or in plastic baggies with a corner snipped off (keep it small, you can make it bigger if you chose).
    • Cut parchment paper to cover the template and apply a dab of icing to cover each dot.
    • Set in a safe place to dry completely. This depends on heat and humidity, mine were dry in just a few hours. Store in zip to lock bags.

I remember eating this as a kid. What fun to be able to make them at home.
