Gifts in a Jar: One Hour Whole Wheat Bread Mix

One Hour Whole Wheat Bread Mix packed in a jar makes an easy gift for both giver and recipient.

Give the gift of homemade bread with an easy Whole Wheat Bread Mix in a Jar. Even a novice baker can make this delicious, healthy whole wheat bread in just one hour!

Just pack the ingredients in the jar, add the instructions and gift it to anyone, near or far.

loaf of sliced whole wheat bread on a cutting board

Everyone loves the smell of freshly baked bread, but the idea of making it from scratch can often seem daunting.

But this Bread Mix makes it simple. All they need to do is add water, stir and bake. About 60 minutes later they have a lovely loaf of freshly baked bread!

Not only are these gifts easy to make, but they are also incredibly affordable. And the recipient can make it when they are ready, up to 6 months later (any longer and the yeast may go stale).

You don't even have to give it away, keep a jar or two on hand to whip up when you need it.

The recipe itself is based on the One Hour Bread I have blogged about before with the dry ingredients mixed together in a jar.

    Batter Bread versus Kneaded Bread

Yes, you can bake a loaf of whole wheat bread from start to finish in an hour!

This is a batter bread not a traditional kneaded bread. It uses more water and yeast and only needs to be mixed together instead of kneaded.

The texture is a bit different, but it tastes like any whole wheat bread.

Best Jars for Whole Wheat Bread Mix

The best jars to use for this are the 24-28 ounce size, which can be hard to find at a store. I often save and reuse jars from pasta sauce for this.

Or you can by them online: mason jars with two part lid or mason jars with hinged lids.

Ingredients for Whole Wheat Bread Mix

You can use 100% whole wheat flour, which can make a somewhat dense loaf. Or you can use whole wheat bread flour or switch some all-purpose flour for some of the whole wheat , or even use all all-purpose flour.

I leave out the honey or molasses for gift giving unless I happen to have packets of real honey to add to the jar.

I admit to being a snob and don't care for honey flavored corn syrup. The recipient can add the sweetener of their choice. It's purpose isn't to make the bread sweet, but to give the yeast something to munch on so your bread will rise.

As for the yeast, be sure to use yeast labeled for Bread Makers or Rapid Rise and make sure it is fresh! Otherwise the bread will not rise.

I did not know bread making was this easy. Your idea of bread mix for gift in a jar is quiet different. I always see hot cocoa mix as gift in a jar. Now I know what is my next experiment in the kitchen πŸ˜‰ #HomeMattersParty.
