Halloween Bat Wings are delicious glazed chicken wings made with a simple homemade Asian flavored sauce with a little black food coloring for extra drama.

Take your Halloween party spread on a deliciously spooky turn with these easy glazed Bat Wings. Use whole chicken wings and a simple but delicious homemade sauce to create this fun recipe.

Marinate overnight and then bake up in 30 minutes for a fun and festive treat.

Halloween in my neighborhood is like a huge block party. Some of our neighbors start setting up their elaborate displays in September. Since we are in California, the weather is usually nice enough many of us sit outside and party together.

People from other areas of town drive their kids to our neighborhood just to trick or treat. Last year I gave out between 3-400 pieces of candy, one each, and was out by 7:30pm. Which is why we will be going dark this year. After 21 years I need a break.

Instead I will make some fun Halloween themed foods like these wings.

Where to Buy Whole Chicken Wings

For the ultimate "bat wing" effect you want to use whole chicken wings with tips attached. These are no longer easy to find in the meat department of typical grocery stores.

    You have a few options:

    • do an online search for places that may carry them near you
    • search Get Real Chicken for a farmer near you
    • ask the butcher at your local grocery store

While it may not be as fun, you can use cut chicken wing pieces as well. After all, Halloween is about the imagination.

    Ingredients for Spooky Bat Wings

While the whole wings may be a challenge to find, most of the ingredients should be in the Asian aisle of a well stocked grocery store.

    • soy sauce - we use low sodium tamari in our house
    • black bean sauce
    • oyster sauce
    • brown sugar
    • black gel food coloring - optional

Note: The black gel food coloring is not those tubes of writing gel for writing on the tops of cakes. Gel food coloring adds a richer deeper color than the liquid coloring. You can find them in places like Michaels, Target, maybe WalMart or online.

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup soy sauce
    • ¼ cup oyster sauce
    • ¼ cup black bean sauce
    • ¼ cup brown sugar
    • black gel food coloring (optional)
    • 20 whole chicken wings with the tips intact

    Instructions

    • Combining all of the ingredients except the chicken wings in a medium bowl. Whisk these together until they are well-combined and sugar is dissolved Reserve ⅓ of the sauce mixture for basting in a covered container and refrigerate until ready to bake.
¼ cup oyster sauce, ¼ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup black bean sauce, 1 cup soy sauce, black gel food coloring
    • Put all of the chicken wings into a large (at least gallon size or larger) plastic zip top bag. Pour in the remaining soy sauce mixture and seal the bag. Ensure wings are thoroughly coated. Refrigerate for 2 hours to overnight, massaging and turning the wings a few times.
20 whole chicken wings with the tips intact
    • Preheat oven to 375℉. Place either parchment paper or aluminum foil on a rimmed baking sheet.
    • Shake excess liquid off of wings and place on baking sheet. If using whole wings, extend them for even cooking. Discard extra marinade.
    • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the juices run clear when pricked with a fork. Baste wings with reserved sauce every 10 minutes. Remove wings from oven and brush any remaining sauce over the wings. Move them from the baking sheet to a wire rack to cool slightly.

    Notes

DO NOT USE those tubes of black writing gel used for writing on the tops of cakes. Gel food coloring adds a richer deeper color than the liquid drops. You can find them in places like Michaels, Target, maybe WalMart or online.
